Preventive care

Oral cancer screenings.

An oral cancer screening is a quick, comfortable check of your mouth, tongue, and throat tissues for anything unusual. It's built into every exam at Clarity Dental, so there's nothing extra to schedule. Oral cancers found early are far more treatable than those found late.

Clinician checking along a patient's jaw and neck during an oral cancer screening

A two-minute check that matters.

During the screening, Dr. Little looks over your lips, cheeks, tongue, the floor and roof of your mouth, and your throat, and gently feels along your jaw and neck. She's looking for patches, sores that haven't healed, lumps, or texture changes that deserve attention.

Most findings turn out to be harmless irritations, and she'll tell you so plainly. When something warrants a closer look, the honest next step is a referral to a specialist for evaluation, and we'll help you arrange it. A screening is a check, not a diagnosis, and its whole value is in catching questions early. It happens automatically at your regular exam, so keeping that rhythm is the real protection.

What to expect

What happens during the screening.

Visual exam

A careful look at all the soft tissues of your mouth and throat under good light. You'll barely notice it happening.

A gentle feel

Dr. Little feels along your jaw, neck, and the floor of your mouth for lumps or tenderness you might not have noticed.

Straight talk

Anything she sees gets named and explained. If a spot should be watched or checked further, you'll know exactly what and why.

Included in your exam.

The screening is part of your exam, with no separate charge. It's simply part of how a thorough checkup works here.

If a referral for further evaluation is ever needed, we'll explain what to expect and help coordinate it. Questions about visit costs in general? Our payment page covers them.

Benefits, honestly

Dental insurance coverage.

Clarity Dental is not in-network with any insurance plan, and you can still be seen here. Most PPO plans pay out-of-network benefits toward care, and we file those claims as a courtesy so you do not have to.

How insurance works here

Ask a question

Your screening questions.

Who should be screened for oral cancer?
Every adult, at every exam. Risk rises with tobacco and heavy alcohol use, sun exposure for the lips, and certain viral infections, but oral cancers also occur in people with no obvious risk factors.
What symptoms should I not ignore?
A sore that hasn't healed in two weeks, a lump, a white or red patch, unexplained numbness, or trouble swallowing deserve a prompt look. Please call the office rather than waiting for your next cleaning.
Does the screening hurt?
No. It's visual and gentle, and it adds only a couple of minutes to your exam.
What happens if something looks suspicious?
We'll tell you honestly and refer you to the right specialist for evaluation, which may include a biopsy. Most referred spots turn out benign, and acting early is what keeps the odds in your favor.
