So what is gum disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place, driven by bacteria in plaque and tartar below the gumline. The early stage, gingivitis, is reversible with professional cleanings and better home care. The later stage, periodontitis, can loosen teeth and needs deeper treatment to get under control.

The most common treatment is scaling and root planing, a deeper cleaning that clears buildup beneath the gums so the tissue can heal and reattach. Afterward, many patients switch to more frequent maintenance cleanings for a while. If your case is advanced, Dr. Little will say so plainly and may involve a periodontal specialist, so you always get the level of care your situation calls for.

What to expect

Back to healthy gums.

Measure up

We measure the pockets around each tooth and check X-rays to map where your gums need help. You see the numbers and what they mean (no mystery codes).

A deeper clean

Scaling and root planing cleans below the gumline, usually one side of your mouth at a time, with numbing so you stay comfortable.

Heal and keep it up

Your gums get time to heal, then we recheck the numbers and set a maintenance rhythm that keeps the gains.

What gum care costs.

Gum treatment cost depends on how many areas need deeper cleaning. You'll see a written estimate before we start, split into stages when that helps.

Many PPO plans cover periodontal treatment at their out-of-network rate, and we file the claim as a courtesy. Comfort options are here if dental visits are tough for you, and financing can spread out the cost.

Benefits, honestly

Dental insurance coverage.

Clarity Dental is not in-network with any insurance plan, and you can still be seen here. Most PPO plans pay out-of-network benefits toward care, and we file those claims as a courtesy so you do not have to.

  • Written estimates before treatment is scheduled
  • Out-of-network claims filed as a courtesy
  • CareCredit financing available
  • Cash, check, all major cards, HSA and FSA

Check your benefits

Bring your plan information to any visit, or call ahead, and the team will explain what your plan is likely to cover before treatment is scheduled.

How insurance works here

Ask a question

Gum health, answered.

Is bleeding when I brush normal?
Nope. Occasional bleeding usually means inflammation is present. It's common, but it's a signal worth acting on, and early treatment is far simpler than late treatment.
Does scaling and root planing hurt?
We numb the area first, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Some tenderness for a day or two afterward is normal and manageable.
Can gum disease be cured?
Gingivitis can be fully reversed. Periodontitis can be controlled and stabilized, though the bone it has already taken doesn't grow back on its own. That's why acting early matters.
Will I lose my teeth?
Most people who treat gum disease and keep up with maintenance keep their teeth. Ignoring it is what puts teeth at risk. An exam will tell you exactly where you stand.
