Cavity defense

Dental sealants.

Ever notice the deep grooves on your back teeth? They're too narrow for toothbrush bristles to clean. Sealants fill and shield those grooves so food and bacteria can't settle in, which is why they're one of the most effective cavity preventers we have (especially for kids).

Block cavities where they start.

A sealant is a thin protective coating bonded into the grooves of a back tooth. It goes on in minutes, needs no numbing, and quietly does its job for years. Most cavities in kids and teens start in exactly the spots sealants cover, so sealing molars soon after they come in is a smart, inexpensive defense.

Adults with deep, cavity-prone grooves can benefit too, as long as the tooth is healthy. During your exam, Dr. Little will tell you whether sealants make sense for you or your child (and just as plainly when they aren't needed).

The quick version

Paint, set, done.

A quick clean

We clean and dry the tooth, then a gentle conditioning gel gets the surface ready. No drilling. No numbing.

Brush, then set

The sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a light in seconds. You can use the tooth normally right away.

Keep an eye on it

We check sealants at regular checkups and touch them up if one wears down or chips over the years.

Tiny cost, smart move.

Sealants cost a small fraction of what a filling does, and that's the whole point: a few minutes of prevention versus years of patching. You'll get the per-tooth cost in writing before we begin.

Many plans cover sealants for kids' molars. We file out-of-network claims as a courtesy and can estimate your plan's likely share; see insurance for how that works.

Benefits, honestly

Dental insurance coverage.

Clarity Dental is not in-network with any insurance plan, and you can still be seen here. Most PPO plans pay out-of-network benefits toward care, and we file those claims as a courtesy so you do not have to.

Ask a question

Got sealant questions?

What age should kids get sealants?
Typically soon after the permanent molars come in, around age six and again around age twelve. Sealing them early protects the years when cavity risk is highest.
Do sealants hurt?
Nope. No drilling and no needle. Most kids find the whole thing pretty uneventful, which is exactly how we like first dental experiences to go.
How long do sealants last?
Often several years. They wear down gradually and can be reapplied, and we check them at every visit so the protection doesn't quietly lapse.
Can you put a sealant over a cavity?
No. Sealants are for healthy teeth only. If decay has already started, the tooth needs a filling instead, which is why the exam comes first.
